PHILLIPS PARK, AURORA

MASTODON ISLAND

The goal of the project is to educate and interpret the life of the Mastodons and the history of the fossil excavation through an interpretive play adventure. The focal point of the Mastodon Island experience will be an adventure Mastodon themed playground that will include appropriately themed play equipment, and a fossil dig activity area. This area will also feature an animatronic mastodon interactive experience. A permeable paver plaza with a shade structure will include a windmill that will generate power for the island and promote green education. The existing shelter and amphitheater area will be retained and improved to allow for group outings to gather for outdoor classes or activities that may feature lessons on the local flora and fauna, historical information on the mastodon dig, or information on the mastodon habitat that once existed in the area.

FOSSIL DIG PLAY AREA

The north portion of Mastodon Island will be improved to include full accessibility, and contain a series of outdoor “activity pods” that will feature various ecological habitats, such as shoreline plants, butterfly gardens, bird habitat and other wildlife enhancements for use by groups or individuals. This path will also feature the locations of the original mastodon fossil excavations, with interpretive signage reviewing these historical events.

Native plant restoration will be emphasized throughout the island. This will improve the wildlife habitat, as well as the water quality of Mastodon Lake. Changing the shoreline to native grasses will reduce nutrient loading and capture silt runoff. Fishing locations will be created, as both deck overlooks and rock outcroppings, to formalize access to the lake and to reduce impact on the shoreline.

The Mastodon Island Adventure project will create an amazing recreational, fun and educational amenity not only for the local area, but for the whole region; while also enhancing the natural environment.
